    Third Sunday of Lent
    March 19, 2017

Find the readings at or in a Bible.

    Exodus 17:3 –7
    Psalm 95:1–2, 6–7, 8–9
    Romans 5:1– 2, 5 – 8
    John 4:5 – 42 or 4:5 –15, 19b – 26, 39a, 40 – 42

    Pray with the Word

    O God, you loved us while we were yet sinners;
in Christ you come in search of us.
    We thirst for your grace.
As once at Moses’ hand in the desert,
as once at Jacob’s well with the Samaritan woman,
so now make your gift of faith in all of us,
    elect and baptized,
a spring of living water, leaping up to eternal life.
    Through Christ our Lord.

    Prepare for the Word

Use these questions to prepare yourself to hear the readings before attending Mass:

Be aware this week of people who are sitting by themselves in the cafeteria at school or during a break at work. What is holding you back from inviting them to sit with you?

Think about a time that you were excited about something that happened to you and you couldn’t wait to tell everyone about it. Would it be different if it was a religious experience?

    Reflect on the Word

Use these questions to reflect on the readings after attending Mass:

The woman at the well spread the Good News to everyone she met after her encounter with Jesus. Has there ever been a time where you felt moved to share the Gospel with someone in your life?

Jesus speaks of himself as the Living Water. What can you do to more fully participate in the eternal life Christ promises us?

    Act on the Word

Use these ideas to act on the readings during the week:
This week, we see the woman at the well struggle to confess her sins of being with a man who is not her husband. Not wanting to confess our sins is a common experience for many of us. This week, participate in an examination of conscience at least once. If possible, partake in the Sacrament of Reconciliation. Even if you don’t have access to the sacrament, spend time reflecting on the sins you have committed and make a plan of how you will try to resist similar temptations in the future.
